Preparing Your Lawn for Winter: Fall Maintenance Tips

Most people stop thinking about their lawn once the weather turns. That's understandable, but what you do — or don't do — in the fall has a direct impact on what your lawn looks like next May.

Keep Mowing Until It Stops Growing

Grass in the Orangeville area typically stops growing in late October or early November depending on the year. Keep mowing until then, and gradually lower your cutting height toward the end of the season — aim for around 2.5 inches on your last cut. Going into winter too long makes the grass more susceptible to snow mold.

Get the Leaves Off

A layer of leaves sitting on the lawn through winter blocks light and traps moisture. That's the recipe for snow mold and matted grass that takes weeks to recover in spring. You don't have to be obsessive about it, but make sure you're not leaving thick piles sitting there.

Mulching leaves with the mower works fine for light coverage. For heavy leaf fall, raking or blowing is faster and more thorough.

Aerate if the Soil is Compacted

Fall is actually the better time to aerate compared to spring. The cooler temperatures and fall rain help the grass recover quickly. If your lawn sees heavy foot traffic or drains poorly, aerating in September or October makes a real difference heading into the following season.

Fill in Thin Spots

Early fall is a good window for overseeding. The soil is still warm, the temperatures are cooler, and weed competition is lower. Seed put down in September has a decent chance of establishing before the ground freezes.

One Last Feed

A fall fertilizer application — something higher in potassium — helps the grass strengthen its root system and store nutrients for winter. This is the application that sets up your lawn for a strong start in spring.

Timing in Orangeville

Aim to have most of your fall lawn tasks wrapped up by mid to late October. Once the ground freezes, there's not much you can do until spring.
