How to Choose the Right Grass Type for Your Orangeville Lawn

Not all grass seed is the same, and what works well in one part of the country won't necessarily do well here. Orangeville and Dufferin County have cold winters, unpredictable springs, and stretches of dry summer heat — your grass needs to handle all of it.

The Main Options for Southern Ontario

**Kentucky Bluegrass** is the most common choice and for good reason. It produces a dense, dark green lawn that looks great and recovers well from wear. The downside is it needs more water than other varieties and goes dormant during dry spells if you're not irrigating.

**Perennial Ryegrass** germinates fast — you'll see it in a week — which makes it good for overseeding or patching bare spots. It handles foot traffic well and blends easily with other grass types.

**Fine Fescue** is the one to use in shady areas. If you've got spots under trees where nothing seems to grow, fine fescue is usually the answer. It's also more drought tolerant and needs less fertilizer than bluegrass.

**Tall Fescue** has deep roots and holds up well under heavy use. It's becoming more popular in Ontario as summers get drier.

Go With a Blend

Most of the better seed mixes combine several grass types rather than going all in on one. A blend gives you the density of bluegrass, the quick establishment of ryegrass, and the shade tolerance of fescue working together. A lawn seeded with a blend tends to be more resilient overall.

What to Think About Before You Buy

How much sun does your lawn actually get? Full sun and heavy shade need completely different seed. How much foot traffic does it see? Kids and dogs are tough on fine fescue. Do you have irrigation or are you relying on rainfall?

Those three questions will narrow your options pretty quickly.
